Predicting network dysfunctions by using Expandium’s forecasting and machine learning features

The main idea behind forecasting is to predict a future condition, or occurrence, based on historical data available in the operator’s databases. This is an opportunity for operators collecting and storing huge amounts of data that offers an invaluable source of knowledge but it is also a cost-saving initiative as it can prevent consequential damages.

It is always easier said than done as the complexity for Operators to make use of these amount of data without costly third-party solutions outweigh their ability to make use of the data…

Understanding forecasting

In order to forecast or foreshadow a network event or occurrence, three basic components are required:

Various metrics can be forecast with different level of accuracy. Use cases ranges from train delays due to seasonal weather conditions to network equipment failure prediction. Use cases will be presented later in this article.

The usual steps for predicting network events are:

  1. Collect historical data
  2. Detect abnormal patterns or malfunctions/events that occurs yearly (or on longer periods if necessary)
  3. Generate a list of upcoming/potential malfunctions/failures
  4. Perform preventive actions, or prioritize maintenance schedules for cost-efficiency, to avoid malfunctions

What is predictive maintenance?

Mixing up preventive and predictive maintenance is a commonly made mistake. There are three types of maintenance:

Expandium focuses on quantitative forecasting for time series in its solutions: the quantitative forecasting builds its analysis based on past data assuming patterns exist or will exist in the future. The qualitative approach is made for poor, unsuited or no data at all.

How can machine learning help an operator to detect upcoming failures from your actual data?

Let’s take the example of Base Station (BS) failures:

1. Define the issue: The basic question(s) we are trying to answer. For our example, it would be:

2. Collect data/information: Aggregate all the information we have on the issue:

3. Analysis: In this phase, our goal is to remove potential seasonal effects/outliers:

4. Select a model: Our in-house algorithm selects the best performing model amongst all the state-of-the-art algorithms:

5. Review the model(s): By replaying historical data and applying the algorithm. Can we detect known BS failures in advance?
